4th Sunday of Lent

Wednesday night a U-Haul truck was parked near the rectory with a dead battery. I offered help. They asked for a flash light and jumper cables and then for my car to give a charge. I was concerned about connecting a truck battery to my car battery. It worked. Before the two men drove off, they called me: “Rev.” Our Scripture readings are about light and seeing. Samuel anoints Jesse’s youngest son. Although man judges by appearances, God peers into the heart. St. Paul writes to the Ephesians to be light! Light is the source of every goodness, justice and truth. Christ is our light. In the Gospel according to St. John, Jesus heals a man born blind. Now able to see physically, he must defend himself from being a fraud and defend Jesus who healed him on the Sabbath. He is expelled from the temple area. Jesus seeks him out and asks him if he knows the Son of Man. Unsure at first, the “blind man able to see” comes to insight about the person of Jesus and worships him. During Lent we pray for discernment to acknowledge and confess our sins; to see Jesus as our Lord; and to observe God’s good works in our community and in the world. Like the blind man, we are radically charged and changed when we come into God’s light in Jesus Christ.
