At dawn on Saturday morning I saw Jupiter, Venus and Mars in alignment. They are not the source of light. The planets reflect the light of the sun. Pope Benedict wrote the light of God shines in and through the saints. Saints or holy ones are in heaven with God but they are also here on earth. St. Paul speaks of the holy ones who have found life in Christ. They are “set apart” by their devotion and compassion. Tonight as we ready to recall by name those who have died this past year in our parish, we commend to God’s mercy all who fallen asleep in the Lord. We pray our loved ones will awaken to see the face of God. “Heaven is not a place in the cosmos but a place in God” – Pope Benedict. I pray the promise of the Beatitudes will come true for all who grieve: “Blessed are those who mourn, they will be comforted” and for the faithful departed: “Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.”
